Know which students can reach a Canvas quiz by IP address
DeckOwl does not change your Canvas settings. It turns your lecture notes, slides or PDFs into quiz questions with explanations, so you can review them before you publish anything.
How IP address limits work on a Canvas quiz
Most Canvas quiz IP address filters work the same way: the instructor lists allowed addresses or ranges in the quiz settings, and Canvas checks each student's connection against that list before the quiz can be started. This suits in-room or proctored exams, but it also catches students on home internet or mobile data, whose addresses fall outside the list.
- Check the quiz settings for an IP filter before assuming a technical fault.
- Ask the instructor which address ranges are allowed if you are blocked.
- Practice from your own notes so the quiz content is familiar on any network.
- Review explanations for missed questions to understand the reasoning, not just the answer.
Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer
Each question comes with an explanation, so students learn why an answer is right, not just which letter to pick.
Built from your own material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page, and questions are based on what you actually taught.
Export on the right plan
Study in the browser on the free plan. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for learning management systems.
How it works
Upload your material
Add the slides, chapter PDF or notes that the quiz will cover.
Review the questions
Check each question and explanation against your course content and edit anything that needs changing.
Study or export
Practice in the browser on the free plan, or export to a file format your course system can import on Pro.
The IP setting controls access, not preparation. Students still need to practice the material, and the most useful prep comes from questions written from the same slides or chapter the quiz covers. DeckOwl can produce multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations from those files, so you can review them before anything goes live.

Frequently asked questions
What is an IP address filter on a quiz?
It is a list of allowed IP addresses or ranges that the quiz checks against each student's connection. Students whose connection does not match the list cannot start the quiz.
Why would a student on home Wi-Fi be blocked from a quiz limited to campus IPs?
Home internet providers assign a different public IP address than campus networks do, so the quiz sees an address outside the allowed list. The instructor can confirm the allowed ranges or make an exception.
How many practice questions should I write before a quiz?
Cover every learning objective at least once, and write more questions than the quiz will show so you can practice with a variety of items. Focus on the ideas you are most likely to be tested on.
Can I export DeckOwl questions for my course system on the free plan?
The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports. Exports are paid features, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are on the Pro plan.
