Turn your own notes into questions for a live Gimkit session

DeckOwl doesn't host Gimkit games or issue play codes. Codes come from the host's Gimkit account. What we do is generate quiz questions from your own material, with explanations, ready to review.

What a gimkit play code does and what DeckOwl can do instead

When a host starts a Gimkit game, students type a gimkit play code to join that session, and the code only works for that game. DeckOwl has no way to look up or generate those codes, so if you need one, the host's account is the place to get it.

  • Codes belong to a specific host session and expire when that game ends.
  • DeckOwl does not join, host or run Gimkit games.
  • Generated questions are a starting point, so check facts against your course material.
  • Free plan: 3 generations per month, study in the browser, no exports.
Example questions for a live review game
Who enters a game code to join a live review session? Each student enters it on their own device. The host shares the code, and everyone who types it joins the same game.
True or false: a shared game code puts every student who enters it into the same session.True. Students who enter the same code join the same host's game, so they compete together in real time.
Why should a teacher preview review questions before starting a live game?Previewing catches wrong answers or unclear wording, since students will see each question at the same time.
What does an explanation add to a practice question? It states why the correct answer is right, so a missed question becomes a learning moment during review.
What is a distractor in a multiple-choice question?A plausible wrong option. Good distractors reflect common misunderstandings, so they reveal gaps in understanding.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, slides, DOCX, plain notes or a photo of a page and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions.

Explanations on every answer

Each question includes a short explanation, so students learn why an option is right or wrong during review.

Exports for your class

Plus exports to PDF and DOCX. Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for learning management systems.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add the slides, handout or notes you want to review. Images of pages are read with text recognition.

Generate and check questions

Choose question types, then read through the output and fix anything that doesn't match your lesson.

Take them into your game or review

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export on a paid plan and build your own live review session.

What DeckOwl can help with is the content behind the game. Paste in a chapter or upload slides and it produces practice questions with correct answers and explanations, which you can review before students see them.

Paid exports to PDF, DOCX, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML let you keep the questions in the formats your school already uses, so the material isn't locked to one session.

Frequently asked questions

How do students use a game code to join a live review?

The host starts the game and shares the code, then each student enters it on the join page on their own device. Everyone who enters the same code joins the same session.

Should I preview review questions before a live game?

Yes. Reading each question first catches unclear wording or wrong answers, which matters because students see the questions at the same time.

Can I export the questions DeckOwl makes?

PDF and DOCX exports are on the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML exports are on Pro at $14.99/month.

Does DeckOwl create Gimkit games for me?

No. DeckOwl generates quiz questions from your own material, and you set up any game or session yourself in the tool you use.
