How Moodle attempt downloads fit with building quizzes

When a unit ends, the most common job is getting results out of Moodle. Downloading Moodle quiz attempts is done from the quiz's Results report, where the download menu saves the data as CSV, Excel or OpenDocument. Scores are the default view, and a responses report adds each student's answer per question, which helps when you want to see where a class struggled.

  • Attempt exports come from the quiz Results report in Moodle.
  • CSV opens in most spreadsheet apps and suits gradebook imports.
  • DeckOwl builds questions from your uploaded material, not from Moodle data.
  • Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month.

Which file formats can you download from a Moodle quiz report? The download menu under the table offers CSV, Excel (.xlsx) and OpenDocument (.ods), depending on your site settings.
What does the Responses report show that the Grades report does not?It lists each student's answer to every question, so you can see which distractors were chosen, not just the total score.

How it works

Open the quiz Results report

In Moodle, go to the quiz, open Results in quiz administration, and choose the report you need, such as Grades or Responses.

Pick a format and download

Use the download menu under the report table to save the attempts as CSV, Excel or OpenDocument. Check the filters first so every attempt you need is included.

Generate new questions if you need them

Upload your notes to DeckOwl, review the generated questions and explanations, then export Moodle XML to import into a new quiz.

DeckOwl covers a different task. It does not connect to your Moodle site or pull attempt data from it. You upload your own PDFs, slides or notes, and it writes multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions with explanations. Export the set as Moodle XML and import it into your question bank.
