How multiple attempts work in Moodle

Most of the decisions in Moodle quiz multiple attempts come down to two settings: how many attempts are allowed, and which grade counts. Under the quiz Attempts settings, 'Attempts allowed' sets a number or Unlimited, and 'Grading method' decides whether Moodle keeps the highest, average, first or last attempt.

  • Attempts allowed: pick a number or Unlimited in the quiz settings.
  • Grading method: Highest grade keeps only the best score across attempts.
  • Each attempt builds on the last: carries prior responses into the next attempt.
  • Delay between attempts: set spacing with the first and later attempt delay options.
Example Moodle quiz attempt settings
Which quiz setting controls how many times a student can attempt a Moodle quiz?'Attempts allowed' under the quiz Attempts settings, set to a number or Unlimited. It caps the total number of attempts per student.
Which Moodle grading method keeps only the best score across attempts?Highest grade. Average grade, First attempt and Last attempt are the other options, each counting attempts differently.
What does 'Each attempt builds on the last' do in Moodle? It carries the responses from the previous attempt into the new one, so a student starts where they left off.
How do multiple attempts differ from multiple tries per question in Moodle?Multiple attempts are full quiz submissions, while multiple tries happen inside one attempt under the 'Interactive with multiple tries' behavior, which gives feedback between tries.
Where do you set a delay between Moodle quiz attempts?Use the 'Delay between first and second attempt' and 'Delay between later attempts' options in the quiz settings, so students must wait before retaking.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or photos of pages. Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions come with explanations.

Export for Moodle

The Pro plan includes QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export. Plus adds PDF and DOCX export for printed review sets.

Practice before the graded attempt

Study in the browser with spaced repetition, so students meet the material before their quiz attempts count.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slides, a Word file or photos of pages.

Generate and review

Choose question types and check each explanation before it goes into a quiz.

Export to Moodle

Download Moodle XML on Pro, then set attempts and grading inside Moodle.

Question behavior is a separate choice. Multiple tries within a single attempt come from the 'Interactive with multiple tries' behavior, which is different from retaking the whole quiz. It is easy to mix these two up, and the result is a retake that does not behave the way the teacher expected.

Good questions matter as much as settings for a retake. If students retake a quiz, write enough distinct questions that a second attempt tests understanding rather than memory of answers, and add explanations so each attempt teaches something.

Frequently asked questions

How do I let students retake a Moodle quiz?

Open the quiz settings and set 'Attempts allowed' to the number you want, or to Unlimited. Then choose a grading method so Moodle knows which attempt counts toward the grade.

Which grading method should I pick for retakes?

Highest grade is a common choice when you want improvement to count, while First attempt suits diagnostic checks. Average grade and Last attempt fall between those options depending on your course policy.

How many questions should a retake quiz include?

There is no fixed number, but enough distinct questions keep a retake from repeating the same items. Check that each question tests the same learning objective from a different angle.

Does DeckOwl export to Moodle?

Yes, Moodle XML export is included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month, along with QTI 2.1. PDF and DOCX export are on Plus, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month.
