How cloze questions work in Moodle quizzes

A Moodle quiz cloze item hides several blanks inside one passage of text, so a single question can test a sentence, a formula or a diagram label at once. Each blank is scored separately, which makes them useful for dense material where one fact depends on another.

  • Keep one fact per blank so each mark is easy to justify.
  • Check the weight number on every blank before you import.
  • Test an import in a sandbox course before using it with students.
  • Write distractors that are plausible but clearly wrong.
Example Moodle cloze embedded-answer questions
Which embedded-answer code makes a short-text blank that accepts osmosis as correct?{1:SHORTANSWER:=osmosis}. The equals sign marks the correct response, and SHORTANSWER creates a text-entry blank.
Which code creates a multiple-choice dropdown blank where Paris is correct?{1:MULTICHOICE:=Paris~London~Rome}. The equals sign marks the correct option, and tildes separate the wrong ones.
What does the number before the colon in {2:NUMERICAL:=9.8} mean?It is the mark weight for that blank, so this blank counts for 2 points within the question.
Which Moodle cloze type should you use for a numeric answer that allows a small margin?NUMERICAL, with a tolerance after the answer, such as {1:NUMERICAL:=9.8:0.1}, so values from 9.7 to 9.9 are accepted.
In a multiple-choice cloze blank, what does the tilde character separate?Incorrect options from each other, so {1:MULTICHOICE:=correct~wrong1~wrong2} lists one correct answer and two distractors.

Any source material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages, and the text is read and turned into questions.

Explanations on every item

Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions come with an explanation so students learn why an answer is right.

Moodle XML export

The Pro plan exports Moodle XML so generated questions can be imported into your Moodle question bank.

How it works

Upload your material

Add lecture slides, a chapter PDF or your own notes for the unit you are teaching.

Generate and review

Get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, then edit wording and distractors before using them.

Export and import

On Pro, export Moodle XML and import it into your course question bank, then build the quiz.

DeckOwl generates multiple-choice, true/false and open questions with explanations, and the Pro plan exports Moodle XML for your question bank. Turning a generated question into embedded-answer format is a short edit in Moodle's question editor, and keeping blanks to three or four per item keeps grading clear for students.

Frequently asked questions

What syntax creates a blank in a Moodle embedded answers question?

Moodle uses placeholders such as {1:SHORTANSWER:=answer}, where the type sets the blank format and the equals sign marks the correct response. The number before the colon is the mark for that blank.

How many blanks should one Moodle cloze question have?

Most instructors keep it to three or four blanks so students can answer in context without losing track of the passage. Long passages with many blanks are harder to grade fairly.

Does DeckOwl export Moodle XML on every plan?

No, Moodle XML export is a Pro feature at $14.99/month. The Free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Can I try DeckOwl before paying?

Yes, the Free plan includes 3 generations per month and no credit card is needed to start.
