Understand Moodle quiz reports and use them to improve questions
DeckOwl builds practice quizzes from your own notes, slides or PDFs, so you can test yourself before the next exam.
What the Moodle quiz report tells you
Teachers often open Moodle quiz reports after an exam to see how the class performed and which questions caused trouble. The Overview report lists each attempt with its grade and timing, while the Responses report shows the answer each student gave to every question.
- Overview shows grades and timing for each attempt.
- Responses shows each student's answer to every question.
- Facility index near 0 or 1 flags questions that were too hard or too easy.
- Negative discrimination suggests a question needs rewording or a corrected answer key.
Quizzes from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page, and get multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions.
Explanations for every answer
Each question comes with a short explanation of why the correct answer is right, so wrong answers become study points.
Moodle XML export on Pro
The Pro plan exports questions as Moodle XML, so you can import them into your course question bank.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add the lecture slides, chapter PDF or typed notes you want to be tested on.
Choose a question type
Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and review the generated set.
Practice or export
Study in the browser on the Free plan, or export to PDF, DOCX or Moodle XML on a paid plan.
The Statistics report goes further. Its facility index shows the share of available marks students earned on a question, so a value near 0 means very few got it right. The discrimination index shows whether stronger students answered a question correctly more often than weaker ones. A low or negative value usually means the wording is unclear or the marked answer is wrong.
DeckOwl does not read attempt data from your Moodle site. What it does is create the questions themselves from your course material, with explanations, so you can write a fresh quiz, review the wording before it goes live, and then export it as Moodle XML on the Pro plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Overview and Responses reports in Moodle?
The Overview report summarizes each attempt with grades and timing for the whole quiz. The Responses report shows the specific answer each student gave to every question.
What does a low facility index tell me about a question?
A low facility index means only a small share of students earned the marks for that question. Check whether the content was taught clearly or whether the question wording is confusing.
Does DeckOwl pull results from my Moodle course?
No. DeckOwl creates quiz questions from the files you upload, and it does not connect to your Moodle gradebook or attempt data.
Is exporting to Moodle XML free?
No. Moodle XML export is included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month, and the Free plan allows studying in the browser only.
