How the Moodle quiz require network address setting works

Moodle quiz require network address rules, found under Extra restrictions on attempts, decide which devices can begin a quiz.

  • Use a single address like 10.0.0.15 for one lab computer.
  • Use 10.0.0.0/24 to allow all 256 addresses from 10.0.0.0 to 10.0.0.255.
  • Pair the network rule with a quiz password if you need a second check at start.
  • Test the restriction with a student account before the quiz window opens.
Example Moodle quiz network address questions
Which Moodle quiz setting limits attempts by IP address?Require network address, under Extra restrictions on attempts. It checks the connecting IP against your list before the attempt starts.
What does 10.0.0.0/24 cover? All 256 addresses from 10.0.0.0 to 10.0.0.255. The /24 fixes the first 24 bits as the network part, leaving 8 bits for host addresses.
How do you exclude one address from an allowed range?Prefix the address with an exclamation mark. This removes that address while the rest of the range stays allowed.
Why might a VPN user be blocked by a list that looks correct? The server sees the VPN exit address, not the device's local address. The list must include the address Moodle actually receives.
How does a network restriction differ from a quiz password?A password is a shared text string students type to start. A network restriction checks the device's IP address, so students type nothing.

IP list control

Enter single addresses, ranges or CIDR blocks such as 10.0.0.0/24 in the quiz settings.

Exclusions

Prefix an address with an exclamation mark to keep one device out of an otherwise allowed range.

Practice questions to import

DeckOwl generates multiple-choice, true/false and open questions with explanations from your notes, then exports Moodle XML on the Pro plan.

How it works

Set the network list

In the Moodle quiz, open Extra restrictions on attempts and enter allowed addresses in Require network address.

Create questions from your material

Upload your PDF, slides or notes to DeckOwl and choose multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions.

Import into Moodle

Export Moodle XML on the Pro plan and import the file into your Moodle question bank.

Moodle compares the connecting IP address with your list before a student sees the first question. Entries can be single addresses, ranges or CIDR blocks such as 192.168.1.0/24, and a leading exclamation mark removes one address from a range. If students appear to come from a different address than their device, for example through a school VPN or proxy, the list must use the address Moodle actually receives.

DeckOwl does not change Moodle settings. It writes the questions: upload your notes, generate practice questions with explanations, then export Moodle XML from the Pro plan and import it into your question bank. The free plan includes 3 generations a month and browser study.

Frequently asked questions

What CIDR range covers 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255?

192.168.1.0/24 covers all 256 addresses from 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255 because the first 24 bits are fixed as the network part.

Why would a student on the right network still be blocked?

Campus Wi-Fi, VPNs and proxies often replace a device's local address with a shared outbound address. Ask IT which address Moodle receives and add that address to the list.

Does DeckOwl change my Moodle quiz settings?

No. DeckOwl creates the questions, and the network address rule stays in your Moodle quiz settings.

Is Moodle XML export included in the free plan?

No. Moodle XML export is on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month includes PDF, DOCX and Anki export.
