What the review settings control

Each Moodle quiz includes moodle quiz review options that decide what students see during, right after, and long after an attempt.

  • Use the after-closed slot for right answers on graded quizzes.
  • Turn on Whether correct without Marks if you want to hide exact scores.
  • Write specific feedback for each answer option so review explains mistakes.
  • Keep overall feedback tied to grade boundaries that match your course.
Example Moodle quiz review option questions
What are the four timing slots in Moodle's quiz review options?During the attempt, immediately after the attempt, later while the quiz is still open, and after the quiz is closed. Each slot has its own set of checkboxes.
How do Marks and Whether correct differ in review options?Marks shows the points earned per question, while Whether correct shows only correct, partially correct or incorrect. Choosing Whether correct alone gives feedback without revealing exact scores.
Which review option shows students the right answer? The Right answer option. Enable it in the after-closed slot for graded quizzes so students see answers only after everyone has finished.
How does Specific feedback differ from General feedback?Specific feedback is written for each answer option, while General feedback is written for the question as a whole. Review settings decide whether students see each one.
What does Overall feedback in a Moodle quiz depend on?The student's total quiz grade, matched to grade boundaries you set. It appears only when Overall feedback is ticked for that timing slot.

Moodle XML export

Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export come with the Pro plan, so questions import straight into your Moodle question bank.

Study tools for students

Flashcards with spaced repetition and quizzes you can study in the browser, with PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export on Plus.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a page.

Check each question

Review the question, its answer and its explanation before you use it in a course.

Export to Moodle

Download Moodle XML on Pro and import it into your quiz question bank.

Moodle splits review into four timing slots, and each slot has its own checkboxes for marks, whether correct, specific and general feedback, the right answer and overall feedback. Showing the right answer too early can hand it to students who have not finished, so many instructors reveal answers only after the quiz closes.

Questions are only as useful as the explanations behind them. Generating questions from your own notes gives you explanations to show in review, and Pro exports them as Moodle XML so you can reuse them in any course.

Frequently asked questions

When should I show the right answer in a Moodle quiz?

Showing correct answers after the quiz closes avoids giving them to students who have not finished. Many instructors reveal right answers only in the after-closed slot for graded quizzes.

Should I show marks in review if students can retake the quiz?

Showing marks helps students gauge progress, but it can reveal more than you want before a retake. Consider turning Marks off in the during-attempt slot.

Can I export generated questions to Moodle?

Yes, Moodle XML export is included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. Free and Plus plans do not include Moodle XML, though Plus exports PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV.

Do I need a credit card to start with DeckOwl?

No. You can start without a credit card on the free plan, which includes 3 generations per month and study in the browser.
