What the Moodle message means and what you can do

Students who hit a moodle quiz review not permitted message are usually blocked by review options the instructor chose, such as a closed review window or feedback that is hidden until a later date.

  • Check the quiz's review options and close dates before assuming the attempt is lost.
  • Email your instructor with the quiz name and ask whether feedback can be released.
  • Upload the lecture slides or notes that cover the same topics as the quiz.
  • Use explanations on each missed question to find the concept you need to review.
Example Moodle quiz review settings to know
Which Moodle quiz setting controls what students can see after an attempt?Review options, set by the instructor. They decide which parts, such as responses, feedback and correct answers, are visible and when.
Why might a student see review not permitted after a quiz closes?A review option set to show details only after the close date blocks access until then, and it may stay blocked once the quiz is closed.
What does the Immediately after the attempt review timing mean?Students can see the selected review options right after submitting, before the quiz close date passes.
Can a teacher allow review without showing the correct answers?Yes. Responses, feedback and correct answers are set separately, so each can be shown or hidden on its own.
Who can change quiz review options in Moodle? The instructor or course staff with editing rights can change them in the quiz settings, because students cannot change the setting themselves.

How it works

Check the review options

Look at the quiz's review settings and dates to see when attempts become visible. Ask your instructor if access is closed.

Upload your study material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photos of pages covering the same topics as the quiz.

Practice the questions

Work through the generated questions and read each explanation, then return to the material for anything you missed.

You cannot change those settings yourself, so the most direct step is to ask your instructor to release feedback or reopen review. In the meantime, you can rebuild the topic from your own class material and test yourself on it.

If you plan to share questions with your class, note that PDF and DOCX exports are on the Plus plan, while Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 exports require Pro.
