How a Moodle quiz timer works and where the questions come from

A moodle quiz timer is set in the quiz settings, not in the question bank. Under Timing, tick Enable, enter the time limit, and Moodle shows a countdown on each attempt. The limit applies to each attempt separately, starting from the moment that attempt begins.

  • Enable the time limit under Timing in the quiz settings, then enter a value for each attempt.
  • Choose what happens when time expires: automatic submission, or an attempt that must be submitted before the deadline.
  • Questions in the question bank are separate from the timer, so import them first and attach them to the quiz after.
  • Check the timed quiz once as a student account before the class sees it.
Example questions on Moodle quiz timer settings
Where do you turn on a time limit for a Moodle quiz?In the quiz settings under Timing, tick Enable and enter the limit. The countdown then appears on each attempt.
Does a Moodle quiz time limit apply to the whole quiz or to each attempt? Each attempt gets its own time limit, counted from when that attempt starts.
Can a student pause a timed Moodle quiz by leaving the page? No. The countdown keeps running on the server, so leaving the page does not stop the clock.
What does the Moodle option Attempts must be submitted before time expires do?An attempt still open at the deadline is not counted, which is stricter than automatic submission. It stops late submissions from being graded.
Why should a question bank be imported before a timed quiz is built? The questions must exist in the bank before they can be added to the quiz, and the timer is a separate setting applied to the quiz itself.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages. Each question is built from the content you gave it.

Explanations on every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so students see why an answer is right before the timed attempt starts.

Moodle XML export

On the Pro plan, export the set as Moodle XML and import it into your question bank, ready to attach to a timed quiz.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the PDF, slides or notes that the quiz should cover.

Choose the question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, then generate the set.

Import and set the timer

Export Moodle XML on Pro, import it into Moodle, then enable the time limit under the quiz Timing settings.

The timer is only half the job. The questions still have to be written, and that is where DeckOwl helps. Upload your notes, generate multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations, and export them as Moodle XML on the Pro plan. Then import the file into your question bank and attach it to a quiz with the time limit you want.

Frequently asked questions

Can a student pause a timed Moodle quiz?

No. Once an attempt starts, the countdown keeps running, so leaving the page does not stop the clock.

What should a timed Moodle quiz cover to be useful for review?

Focus each quiz on one unit or a small set of concepts so the time limit tests recall rather than speed reading. Mix recall questions with a few application questions drawn from the same notes.

Does DeckOwl set the Moodle timer for me?

No. The time limit is set inside Moodle's quiz settings, while DeckOwl generates the questions and explanations you import.

Is Moodle XML export included in the free plan?

No. Exports are paid features, and Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.
