Where user overrides fit into your course

A Moodle quiz user override is useful when one student needs a later deadline, a longer time limit or an extra attempt, but the rest of the class should keep the default settings. Teachers set these exceptions in the quiz's override settings, so the change stays with that student.

  • Overrides apply only to the students or groups you select.
  • A user override takes priority over a group override for the same setting.
  • Common uses include extra time for accommodations and reopened attempts after a technical problem.
  • Check the override list in the quiz before the exam so no student is missed.
Example Moodle quiz override questions for teachers
If a student has a user override and a group override set for the same quiz time limit, which one applies? The user override applies, because user overrides take priority over group overrides for the same setting.
Which quiz settings can a Moodle user override change?Open and close dates, time limit, number of attempts and password, because these are the settings the override form covers.
Where does a teacher add a user override in a Moodle quiz?Under Quiz administration, in the Overrides page, using Add user override, because that is where individual exceptions are created.
Does a user override change the quiz for students who are not selected? No, it applies only to the selected student, so everyone else keeps the quiz's default dates, limits and attempts.
What is a common reason to give a student a longer time limit override? An accommodation such as extra time for a documented need, because the override adjusts only that student's time limit.

Starts from your own material

Upload PDFs, slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages and get questions built from that content.

Multiple choice, true/false and open questions

Each question comes with an explanation so students learn why the answer is right, not just which letter to pick.

Moodle XML export on Pro

The Pro plan exports Moodle XML so generated questions can be imported into a Moodle question bank.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck, DOCX file, or text notes for the topic you are teaching.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions, and set how many you want.

Review and export

Check the questions and explanations, then export them to Moodle XML on the Pro plan or study them in the browser.

DeckOwl does not connect to Moodle or change quiz settings. It helps with the content side: generate practice questions from your lecture material, review the explanations, and export to Moodle XML on Pro when you want to import them into your question bank.
