When an override is the right fix

Many teachers need to change one student's score after a quiz closes, and the usual route is a Moodle quiz grade override in the gradebook or attempt review. The change is saved against that student only, so the rest of the class keeps its original marks.

  • Overridden gradebook values are marked, so a later recalculation does not overwrite them.
  • Check the attempt review before overriding, so you know whether the question marks or the total need fixing.
  • Record the reason for each override in your own notes so the change can be explained later.
  • Build replacement or retake questions from your own course material rather than retyping them.
Example Moodle quiz grade override questions
In the Moodle gradebook, what happens when you type a new value over a calculated grade? The cell is marked as overridden, so later recalculations keep your value instead of replacing it.
Does overriding a quiz total in the gradebook change each question's mark on the attempt? No, the attempt keeps its recorded question marks, so the gradebook total and the attempt review can differ.
Where do you manually mark open-ended quiz questions in Moodle? On the quiz's manual grading page, because open answers need a teacher to assign marks before the total updates.
Why import quiz questions as Moodle XML instead of retyping them?Moodle XML loads many questions into the question bank at once, which saves setup time and keeps feedback attached.
What should you check before overriding a student's grade?Review the attempt and each question's marks first, so you know whether the error belongs in the attempt or in the gradebook.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX files, slides, plain notes or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions.

Explanations with every answer

Each question includes an explanation so students can see why the correct option is right, not just which one it is.

Moodle XML export on Pro

The Pro plan exports Moodle XML, so you can import generated questions into your Moodle question bank in one go.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add the chapter, slides or lecture notes the quiz should cover. Free accounts get 3 generations per month with no credit card needed.

Review the questions

Check each question and explanation against your course material and edit anything that does not match what you taught.

Export or study

Study in the browser on any plan, or export to Moodle XML on Pro after you have reviewed the set.

Overrides fix individual cases, not the whole quiz. If you need new practice questions for a retake, DeckOwl can turn your PDFs, slides or notes into multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations, then export them as Moodle XML on the Pro plan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I override a quiz grade for one student in Moodle?

Open the gradebook or the quiz attempt, enter the new value for that student, and save. Moodle marks the cell as overridden so later recalculations keep your change.

Does an overridden grade change the question marks on the attempt?

Usually not. The gradebook total can differ from the per-question marks shown in the attempt review, so check both before you report the result.

Can DeckOwl change grades inside my Moodle course?

No. DeckOwl generates quiz questions from your material and exports Moodle XML on the Pro plan, but grades stay in Moodle.

Is Moodle XML export included in the free plan?

No. Moodle XML export is part of Pro at $14.99/month, while the free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.
