Canvas quizzes with multiple attempts, built from your own material

DeckOwl does not change Canvas settings. It turns your PDFs, slides or notes into multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions you can practice as many times as you need before the graded quiz.

How retakes and practice fit together

Canvas quizzes that allow multiple attempts are set in the quiz Options under Allowed Attempts, where the instructor chooses a number or Unlimited. That setting controls how many submissions each student gets, and it stays in the course.

  • Check your understanding before using a retake on the real quiz.
  • Read explanations that show why the right answer is correct.
  • Free plan: 3 generations per month with study in the browser.
  • Plus exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV; Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.
Example Canvas quiz settings for multiple attempts
In Canvas, where do you set how many attempts a student gets on a quiz?In the quiz Options section, under Allowed Attempts. That field caps submissions per student or leaves them unlimited.
What does the Score to Keep setting control on a Canvas quiz?Which attempt's score counts toward the gradebook, such as the highest or the latest. A retake only helps the grade if this setting keeps the attempt you want.
Why might a student see no retake option on a Canvas quiz?Their allowed attempts are used up, or the quiz is outside its availability window. Canvas blocks new submissions once either limit applies.
What does choosing Unlimited for Allowed Attempts mean? The student can submit as many times as they want while the quiz is open. Availability dates still close the quiz even when attempts are unlimited.
Where can an instructor review each attempt a student made on a Canvas quiz?In the quiz submission details or SpeedGrader, where each attempt is listed. The gradebook keeps only the score chosen in Score to Keep, but the attempt history stays viewable.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photos of your course pages.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer, then generate the set.

Practice and retake

Check each explanation, then run the set again until you can answer every question without looking.

Practice happens outside Canvas. DeckOwl reads your lecture slides, notes or readings and writes new questions with explanations, so each study session is a fresh set built from the material your instructor covers.

Frequently asked questions

Can DeckOwl change the allowed attempts on a Canvas quiz?

No. DeckOwl does not connect to Canvas, so the Allowed Attempts setting stays under your instructor's control. It creates practice questions from your own files instead.

Where do I set Allowed Attempts in Canvas?

Open the quiz, select Edit, and find Allowed Attempts in the Options section. Choose a number of attempts or select Unlimited.

Which score does Canvas count when a quiz allows multiple attempts?

Canvas uses the Score to Keep setting, such as the highest or latest attempt, to decide which score goes to the gradebook. Check that option in the quiz settings before students begin.

Are exports to LMS formats included in the free plan?

No. Exports are paid features: QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML require the Pro plan, while PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV require Plus.
