Allow more than one try on a Canvas quiz, and pick the score that counts
Canvas lets instructors allow several attempts and choose which score reaches the gradebook. DeckOwl turns your own slides, notes or PDFs into quiz questions with explanations, so each retake has fresh material to test on.
Setting up multiple attempts in Canvas
Most Canvas quizzes allow one submission, which leaves little room for practice. Turning on canvas quiz multiple attempts happens inside the quiz itself, in the Options section, rather than in the course gradebook.
- Set Allowed Attempts under Options after checking Multiple Attempts.
- Choose a score to keep that matches whether the quiz is for practice or for grading.
- Check the due date and availability window so retakes are not cut off unexpectedly.
- Confirm when correct answers are shown, so students can review mistakes between attempts.
Retakes on your terms
Set an attempt limit in the quiz settings, then decide whether the highest, latest or average score is recorded.
Fresh questions for each try
Generate multiple-choice, true/false or open questions from your own material so students are not repeating the same items.
Explanations on every answer
Each question comes with an explanation, which helps students learn from a wrong attempt before the next one.
How it works
Open the quiz settings in Canvas
Edit the quiz, go to Options, and check Multiple Attempts to reveal the Allowed Attempts field.
Choose the score to keep
Pick highest, latest or average based on whether retakes are meant to show improvement or measure final understanding.
Generate new practice questions
Upload your notes or slides to DeckOwl and create a fresh set of questions to use on the next attempt or in a study session.
The score-to-keep setting decides what the gradebook records once a student has more than one submission. Highest rewards the best effort, latest shows the final result after review, and average blends every attempt into one grade.
Reusing the same questions each time can make a retake a memory test instead of a learning check. Generating a new question set from the same material keeps retakes focused on the concepts.

Frequently asked questions
How many attempts should a Canvas quiz allow?
Many instructors allow two or three attempts for practice quizzes and keep the highest score. The right number depends on whether retakes are meant to build recall or to measure mastery on a single day.
Does retaking a quiz help more than rereading notes?
Retrieval practice, where students answer questions from memory, generally builds recall better than rereading. Spacing retakes across several days usually helps more than taking them all in one sitting.
Can DeckOwl export questions for Canvas?
The Pro plan exports QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML files, which are standard formats for importing quiz questions into learning management systems. Check your course's import steps before uploading.
Is the free plan enough to make practice quizzes?
The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but it does not include exports. Plus removes the generation limit and adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.
