Reading your Canvas quiz results

Your Canvas quiz results show the score for each attempt, but they rarely explain which concept caused a miss. A 14 out of 20 tells you how much you earned, not whether you confused two definitions or misread a question.

  • Convert a raw score into a percentage by dividing points earned by points possible.
  • Group missed questions by topic instead of reviewing them in the order they appeared.
  • Re-study the explanation for each missed question before retaking the quiz.
  • Retake practice sets on weak topics until you can explain the correct answer in your own words.
Example questions for reading quiz results
A Canvas quiz shows 14 out of 20 points. What is the percentage score?70%, because 14 divided by 20 is 0.70, and multiplying by 100 gives the percentage.
What does item analysis show an instructor about a quiz question? How the class performed on that question, such as the share who answered it correctly, which helps flag items that are too easy, too hard or unclear.
What is the difference between a raw score and a percentage score?A raw score is the points earned, such as 18 of 24, while a percentage divides that by the total possible points, which makes scores comparable across quizzes.
Why might a student miss a question they actually understood? The wording or an answer option may have been unclear, or the student may have misread a detail, so reviewing the question text separates a knowledge gap from a question problem.
What should you do after receiving a quiz result?Sort the missed questions by topic, re-study those sections and retake practice questions on them, since correct answers from lucky guesses can hide gaps.

Practice questions from your own material

Upload the lecture slides or notes behind a Canvas quiz and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions that cover the same concepts.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes an explanation, so you can see why an option is wrong after you miss it, not just that it was marked incorrect.

Exports for paid plans

Plus exports PDF and DOCX files, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for course platforms that accept those formats.

How it works

Note the topics you missed

Look at your Canvas quiz results and list the questions or sections where you lost points.

Upload the matching material

Add the slides, PDF or notes that cover those topics. Photos of printed pages work too.

Practice until you can explain each answer

Work through the generated questions, read the explanations and retake the set until the missed topics feel solid.

Start by grouping missed questions by topic. If three of them come from the same chapter, that section needs another pass. Then rebuild practice questions from that chapter's material and check each explanation, so a guess does not hide a real gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see my results in Canvas?

Your score usually appears in the quiz or gradebook after you submit. Whether you can see the correct answers depends on the settings your instructor chose for that quiz.

How should I study the questions I missed?

Group them by topic, reread the matching section of your notes and then answer new questions on the same concept. Explaining the answer aloud is a good test that you understand it.

Is there a free way to practice?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exporting to other formats requires a paid plan.

Can I export practice quizzes to Canvas or Moodle?

QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are part of the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. PDF and DOCX export are available on Plus.
