Make an online quiz using Google Forms from your own notes
DeckOwl turns your PDFs, slides or notes into multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations, ready to copy into a form.
Build questions first, then the form
Writing questions is the slow part of any quiz, whether you are a teacher or a student checking your own understanding. If you are working out how to make an online quiz using Google Forms, start by gathering the material the quiz should cover, then let the questions come from that material.
- Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page
- Choose multiple choice, true/false or open questions
- Review explanations before copying questions into your form
- Free plan includes 3 generations per month, with no exports
Questions from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a page and get questions based on what is actually in it.
Explanations included
Each question comes with an explanation, so you can check the answer key and use the reasoning as feedback for respondents.
Pick the question type
Choose multiple choice, true/false or open questions, depending on what you want to test.
How it works
Upload your material
Add the reading, lecture slides or notes the quiz should cover.
Generate and review
Pick a question type, then remove any question that is vague or off topic.
Build the form
Turn on quiz mode in Google Forms, then add each question with its correct answer and points.
DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain notes and photos of pages, then writes multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations. Review each one, cut anything vague, and keep the explanations, since they make useful feedback.
Then open a new Google Form, switch on quiz mode under Settings, and add each question with its answer key. Quiz mode is what lets you set points and choose when grades are released.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to turn on quiz mode before adding questions in Google Forms?
You can add questions either way, but quiz mode in the Settings tab unlocks the answer key, point values and grade release options. Turn it on first so you do not have to re-enter anything.
How do I make a Google Forms quiz question worth more points?
Open the question, go to its answer key, and enter a number in the points field. Then mark the correct answer so the form can grade it automatically.
Does DeckOwl export straight into Google Forms?
No. Plus exports PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV files, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML, so you copy the questions into a Google Form by hand.
Is the free plan enough to try it?
The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, with no exports. No credit card is needed to start.
