Turn your notes into a timed Google Forms quiz

Google Forms can grade quizzes, but its built-in settings do not count down per student. Set a response window, add a timer tool, and start from questions drafted from your own material.

What Google Forms can and cannot time

Google Forms has quiz mode and grading, but no standard countdown that runs for each student. Most teachers who want a timed Google Forms quiz combine the form's closing time with a clock students can see, such as a phone timer or an add-on.

  • Set Make this a quiz under Settings before adding questions.
  • Use Limit to 1 response so each person gets one counted attempt.
  • Add a closing time under Responses to stop late submissions.
  • Test the timer on a copy of the form with a classmate first.
Example Google Forms quiz settings to check
Where do you turn on quiz mode in Google Forms?Open Settings and toggle Make this a quiz. Quiz mode is what enables point values, answer keys and feedback.
What does Limit to 1 response do in a quiz form?It blocks a second submission from the same respondent, so a timed attempt cannot be repeated. It works best when the form also requires sign-in.
Why set a closing time for a timed quiz form?It stops new responses at a fixed moment, which keeps the whole class window consistent. It does not by itself count down for each student.
When can you release scores in a Google Forms quiz?Quiz settings let you release scores immediately after submission or later after review. Choose later if you need to check short answers first.
What is one drawback of an Apps Script timer? It needs code or an add-on, and it may not stop answering when time runs out unless the script checks elapsed time. Test it before using it for a graded quiz.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions with explanations to paste into a form.

Response limits

Turn on quiz mode and limit responses to one per person so students cannot retake the form after a timed attempt.

Export options

Free users study in the browser. Plus adds PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for other platforms.

How it works

Draft the questions

Generate a question set from your own notes, then check each answer and explanation against the source.

Build the form

Create a Google Form, switch on Make this a quiz under Settings, and add the questions with point values.

Add the time limit

Set a closing time under Responses, or use an add-on or Apps Script timer for a per-student countdown.

The fastest route is drafting the questions first. Paste your chapter notes or lecture slides into DeckOwl, check each question against the source, and then copy the ones you want into the form. Keep the time limit realistic for the question type, since recall items take less time than multi-step problems.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Forms have a built-in timer for quizzes?

Standard Google Forms settings do not give each respondent their own countdown. You can close the form at a set time, and add-ons or Apps Script projects can add a per-student timer.

How much time should I allow for a timed quiz?

Allow more time for questions that need calculation or explanation than for quick recall items. Run the quiz yourself once, then adjust the limit before students take it.

Can I export my quiz questions for another platform?

Plus includes PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

How much does DeckOwl cost?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month. Plus is $99.90/year or $9.99/month, Pro is $14.99/month, and students get 40% off with a school email.
