How the quiz scale decides your grade

Moodle does not hand you the raw total of question marks. It converts that total to the Moodle quiz maximum grade, so the scale you set in quiz settings decides what each attempt is worth.

  • Question marks set how much each question weighs inside the quiz.
  • The Maximum grade field sets the scale for the final score.
  • Attempts are stored as a share of the total marks, so rescaling is safe.
  • Review the gradebook after any change to the maximum grade.
Example Moodle quiz grading questions
In Moodle, which quiz setting controls the highest grade a quiz can contribute to the course? The Maximum grade field in the Grade section of quiz settings. It sets the scale that attempt totals are converted to.
A quiz has questions worth 20 marks in total and a Maximum grade of 10. What does a 15-mark attempt score?7.5 out of 10. Moodle scales the raw total by dividing the maximum grade by the sum of question marks, then multiplying by the raw score.
If you change a quiz's maximum grade after students have attempted it, what happens to existing grades?Moodle recalculates them on the new scale, because attempts are stored as a share of the total marks.
What is the default Maximum grade for a new Moodle quiz?10. Moodle uses this default unless the site administrator has changed the quiz default setting.
Does changing a question's mark change the quiz's maximum grade? No. The question mark sets that question's weight within the quiz, while the maximum grade sets the scale for the final grade.

Questions from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations.

Explanations for every answer

Each generated question includes a short explanation, so you can check why an option is right before you use it in a graded quiz.

Moodle XML export on Pro

The Pro plan at $14.99 per month exports Moodle XML and QTI 2.1, so you can import questions into your Moodle question bank.

How it works

Upload your notes or slides

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photos of your course pages. Text recognition reads images as well.

Pick the question types

Choose multiple choice, true/false or short answer, then generate a set based on your own material.

Review, then export or study

Check the explanations in the browser. Export to Moodle XML with the Pro plan, or study with flashcards and spaced repetition.

To change it, open the quiz settings, find the Grade section, and edit the Maximum grade field before students attempt the quiz. Changing it later rescales existing attempts, so check the gradebook afterward.

DeckOwl can write the questions themselves from your own notes or slides, with multiple-choice, true/false or short answer items and explanations to review before you add them to Moodle.
