Setting a pass mark that matches your course

Your moodle quiz grade to pass is the minimum score a student needs, and it has to sit on the same scale as the quiz's maximum grade. A 60 percent pass mark on a 20-point quiz means entering 12, not 60.

  • Enter the pass score on the quiz's maximum grade scale, not as a raw percentage.
  • Check the gradebook item for the quiz, since it keeps its own grade to pass setting.
  • Make sure the pass grade never exceeds the maximum grade, or it cannot be reached.
  • Generate practice questions from the same notes the quiz draws on, then review the explanations.
Example Moodle quiz pass grade questions
Where do you set the grade to pass for a Moodle quiz?In the quiz settings under the Grade section. It is entered on the same scale as the quiz's maximum grade.
A Moodle quiz is out of 20 and the pass mark is 60 percent. What grade to pass should you enter?12. Multiply 20 by 0.6 so the pass grade matches the quiz's own scale.
Does a student who scores exactly the grade to pass meet the requirement?Yes. A score equal to the grade to pass counts as a pass; only scores below it fall short.
Why might a quiz pass grade differ from what appears in the gradebook? The gradebook item keeps its own grade to pass setting. Update it so both places show the same pass mark.
Can a Moodle quiz grade to pass be higher than the maximum grade? No. A pass grade above the maximum grade can never be reached, so keep it at or below the maximum.
