How the layout works in Moodle

A Moodle quiz layout comes down to three decisions: how many questions sit on each page, whether students can move back and forth, and where page breaks fall. Those settings shape how the quiz feels, but they only work well once the question bank is already full of clear, accurate items.

  • Set questions per page to match the length of the quiz and the time you allow.
  • Use Free navigation for practice and Sequential navigation for timed assessments.
  • Check each generated question against your source material before importing.
  • Keep question names consistent so the question bank stays easy to search.
Example Moodle quiz layout practice questions
Where do you set how many questions appear on each page of a Moodle quiz?Use the Repaginate option on the Edit quiz page to set questions per page, or add page breaks manually. This controls the layout without changing the questions themselves.
What does the navigation method setting control in a Moodle quiz?Free lets students move between pages in any order, while Sequential stops them returning to earlier pages. Sequential is common for timed exams where answers should be final.
Why would an instructor choose Sequential navigation for an exam?It prevents students from going back to change earlier answers after moving on, which keeps timed assessments fair.
Which file format does Moodle use to import questions in bulk?Moodle XML, imported through the question bank's Import option. It keeps question types, answers and feedback together in one file.
What is a page break in a Moodle quiz?A marker that ends one page and starts the next, so the questions after it appear on a new screen. It lets you control how many questions students see at once.
Generate the full set

Multiple question types

Generate multiple-choice, true/false and open questions from PDFs, DOCX files, slides, notes or photos of pages.

Explanations for each answer

Every generated question includes an explanation, so you can check the wording before it goes into a Moodle quiz.

Moodle XML export

On the Pro plan, export questions as Moodle XML and import them into your question bank, then set the layout in Moodle.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of your notes. Free accounts can study in the browser with 5 generations a week.

Choose question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, and generate a set that matches the topics your quiz covers.

Import and lay out in Moodle

Export as Moodle XML on the Pro plan, import into the question bank, then set questions per page and navigation in quiz settings.

Writing those questions is usually the slow part. DeckOwl reads your own notes and produces questions with explanations, so you can review them, import the set and spend your time on the layout instead of starting from a blank page.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should go on each page of a Moodle quiz?

There is no fixed rule. Fewer questions per page suit timed exams, while more questions per page suit practice quizzes where students move around freely.

What is the difference between Free and Sequential navigation in Moodle?

Free navigation lets students jump between pages, while Sequential navigation stops them returning to earlier pages. Sequential is often used for exams where changing earlier answers should not be allowed.

Can DeckOwl export questions directly into Moodle?

Yes, Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan, and you import the file through your Moodle question bank. Free and Plus plans do not include Moodle XML export.

Is there a free plan to try it first?

Yes, the Free plan includes 5 generations a week and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports require a paid plan.
