Why attempts stay not yet graded

Teachers who see a Moodle quiz marked not yet graded in the gradebook are usually looking at an essay or another question type Moodle cannot score by itself. Multiple-choice and true/false questions are scored automatically when a student submits, but free-text responses stay pending until someone reads them.

  • Essay and other manual questions wait for a teacher to mark them.
  • Auto-graded questions are scored as soon as the student submits.
  • Saving each manual mark updates the attempt total and status.
  • Check the Manual grading report when an attempt stays pending for days.
Example Moodle grading questions and answers
Why does a Moodle quiz attempt show not yet graded? At least one question needs a teacher's mark, usually an essay, because Moodle cannot score free-text answers automatically.
Which Moodle question types are never auto-graded?Essay questions are always marked by a teacher, since a free-text response cannot be matched against a single fixed answer.
Where do teachers mark pending Moodle quiz responses?Open the quiz, go to Results, then Manual grading, which lists each response that still needs a mark and saves it when you submit.
Why does a quiz total change after manual grading?Manual marks are added to the automatically scored questions, so the total updates once the teacher saves each pending mark.
Which Moodle questions are scored as soon as a student submits?Multiple-choice and true/false questions are scored automatically because Moodle compares the response with the stored correct answer.

Question-level answers

Upload your PDF, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, each with an explanation.

Export for Moodle

On Pro, export your generated questions as Moodle XML or QTI 2.1 so they can be imported into your course bank.

Study in the browser

The free plan gives you 3 generations a month and lets you study the questions in the browser with no credit card.

How it works

Open the quiz results

In the Moodle course, go to the quiz and open Results, then choose Manual grading to see responses waiting for a mark.

Mark each pending response

Read each essay or other manual answer, enter a mark and feedback, then save so the attempt status updates.

Generate a fresh practice quiz

Upload the lecture notes behind the quiz to DeckOwl and get new questions with explanations you can review or export.

Once the manual marks are saved, Moodle adds them to the automatic scores and the attempt is finalized. If a quiz still shows pending items after grading, check that every manual question in the Manual grading report has been saved and that no attempt is still in progress.

DeckOwl does not connect to your Moodle grading, but it can help you prepare the material behind a quiz. Upload your notes and it will generate questions with explanations, which you can study in the browser or export to Moodle XML on the Pro plan.
