What your Moodle quiz results actually tell you

Opening your Moodle quiz results usually means checking three things: the recorded grade, how many attempts were counted and which questions students missed most. Each one answers a different question about the quiz itself.

  • Confirm the grading method (highest, average, first or last attempt) before reading any grade.
  • Compare the quiz maximum grade with the total marks of its questions, since Moodle scales between them.
  • Review questions with very low discrimination values for unclear wording or a wrong answer key.
  • Generate a fresh quiz from your own notes when you want new practice questions for the next session.
Example Moodle quiz results questions
A Moodle quiz allows 3 attempts with the grading method set to Highest grade. A student scores 6, 8 and 7 out of 10. What grade is recorded?8 out of 10. Highest grade keeps the best attempt, so lower attempts do not reduce the recorded result.
What does the facility index show in Moodle question statistics? The percentage of students who answered the question correctly. Very high or very low values suggest the question may be too easy or too hard.
Why can a Moodle quiz grade appear scaled to a different maximum? The quiz maximum grade is set separately from the total marks of its questions. Moodle scales the question total to that maximum, so a 12-mark quiz can display out of 10.
What does a negative discrimination index mean?Lower-scoring students answered the question correctly more often than higher scorers. It usually points to a wrong answer key or unclear wording.
Which quiz setting controls what students see after an attempt? The review options, which can show correct answers and feedback immediately, later or not at all. They let you decide when students receive feedback.

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer

Each question comes with an explanation so students learn from wrong answers, not just scores.

Flashcards with spaced repetition

Turn the same material into cards and review them on a schedule that adjusts to what you forget.

Exports that fit your course

Export to PDF and DOCX on Plus, and to QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML on Pro for import into your course.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page.

Choose the question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions and the number you want.

Study or export

Practice in the browser on the free plan, or export the quiz to Moodle XML on Pro.

The attempt setting matters as much as the score. Moodle can record the highest, average, first or last attempt, so two students with the same attempts can show different grades. Check the grading method before deciding a result reflects understanding.

Question statistics show whether a question is working. Facility and discrimination indexes flag items that nearly everyone gets right, or that stronger students miss more often than weaker ones, which usually points to wording or answer-key problems.

Frequently asked questions

What does a negative discrimination index mean in Moodle quiz statistics?

It means students who scored lower overall answered the question correctly more often than higher scorers. This usually signals a wrong answer key or confusing wording, so the question is worth reviewing.

Which grading method should I choose when a Moodle quiz allows several attempts?

Highest grade is common for practice quizzes because it keeps each student's best effort. First attempt gives a clearer picture of what students knew before any review, so pick based on what you want to measure.

Can DeckOwl export quizzes to Moodle?

Yes, Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan, which costs $14.99 per month. Plus includes PDF and DOCX export, and the free plan allows studying in the browser without exports.
